The Time Machine

The Time Machine and Social Degeneration

In the book, The Time Machine, social degeneration is evident everywhere. For example, the Eloi are not intelligent, the Morlocks live underground and in the dark,   and they both have completely forgotten about technology. The two species have degressed and are what we would think of when we imagine future. H. G. Wells obviously thought that if humans stayed on a certain path, they would end up in this world of fear and have to keep rehabitating to life there. In this book, people have developed into a child-like state or into an apelike state, the Eloi or the Morlocks, and they are enimies.
"Then he turned to the two others who were with him and spoke to them in a strange and very sweet and liquid tongue." The Eloi are described in the book as child-like. They have a Dresdenchina type of prettiness. They also have short, curly hair, small ears, small mouths with bright red lips, and pointed chins. Their eyes were large and mild, but had a lack of interest in them. The Eloi thought that the Time Traveler came from the Sun in a thunderstorm. The Time Traveler was disappointed and he felt that he had built the machine in vain because the Eloi seem to have the intellectual of five-year old children. "You see I had always anticipated that the people of the year 802,701 AD. odd would be incredibly in front of us in knowledge, art, everything." The Eloi seemed to have gone backwards instead of forwards in their intellect. They do not want to learn either. "However, I felt like a schoolmaster admist children... But it was slow work, and the little people soon tired and wanted to get away from my interrogations, so I determined, rather of necessity, to let them give their lessons in little doses when they felt inclined."
As quoted in this novella "the whole earth had become a garden." Throuhout the present time and the year 802,701 the author incorporated many changes to the earth and how people do things. From his quote you might infer plants and flowers had become an immense part of the world. This was true as was their archictecture degrading greatly in this future time period compared to now. "At last a steady twilight brooded over the earth." While travelling back to the present time the time traveller stopped in many time periods and places. At this point in time described in this quote, the world had become very dark and empty. The last setting in this story was simply a beach. Strange beach-like creatures, such as giant crabs, romed on this large sloping beach as it was called in the novella. Many settings were involved in this story; however, the first one listed here has the biggest part in this book.
In this book, The Time Machine, the Eloi are more or less controlled by the Morlocks. The Morlocks are nocturnal and the lights blind them. "The old instinctive dread of wild beasts came upon me." When man evolved into two species, they also feel back in technology. The Morlocks live underground and when the moon is in a certain stage (New Moon), they come feed on the Eloi. It is similar to how we controld cattle. The both species completlety have fear on their world. "Solitary white, ape-like creatures!" They are even afraid to fight back; therefore, the morlocks completely control them.
Social degeneration is clearly evident in this book. You have heard about the Eloi, the Morlocks, and the setting of the book. You learned that the Eloi are not very smart. You learned that the Morlocks are clever but stupid at the same time. You learned that the setting is boring with flowers everywhere. The last three scentences tell you that social degeneration is most everywhere. The End!
